History
When the property was purchased in 1991, Two Figs was grassy open paddocks with a few Camphor trees around the boundaries and the two massive fig trees in the top corner.
Permaculture Design
From the start, sustainability and looking after the environment has been a primary concern. In the first couple of years hundreds of native trees were planted around the boundaries and in windbreaks to provide shelter. A permaculture design was implemented with dams, swales across the slopes, earth berms and plantings of fruit and nut trees, herbs, flowering plants and a vegetable garden.
Building from the Past
The cottage was built using recycled railway bridge timbers, second hand doors, windows and flooring from an old house being demolished on the coast, and even a few bits and pieces we had salvaged in Melbourne.
During the 1990s the main house was started, again using huge timbers, this time from the demolition of the iconic Arnotts biscuit factory in Brisbane. A crane was brought in to lift them into place. Incorporating more of the region’s heritage, many of the windows are from an old hotel in MacLean and the lounge room features Blackwood doors and an elaborate mantelpiece from Melbourne.
The Gardens
Our gorgeous Bamboo forest was also established in the ’90s, many fruit and nut trees have been planted over the years and lush gardens of both native and exotic plants have extended in all directions – quite a transformation from the grassy hillside of 20 years ago.
Wonderful WWOOFers
We have hosted WWOOFers (Willing Workers On Organic Farms) for over 20 years and the contribution of energy, skills and fun from the many international and Aussie travellers who have visited has been enormous.
Sustainability
Recently a 10 kilowatt solar power system has been installed and a small lake, completing the original permaculture concept, and providing energy and water security. The lake is a wonderful place for swimming, boating and relaxing. The wildlife appreciate it too!
